Dear Fusion...

Dear Fusion,
I have not worked out in about a year.  Before that I was very active and worked out at least 3-4 times per week.  What is the best way to get back into exercise again and stay committed this time?

Dear Michelle,
Lack of time and frustration are the two biggest reasons I hear people stop their exercise routine.  Here are five tips for staying on track this time around.

  1. SET A GOAL – When you set a goal and tell people your goals, you are more likely to succeed.  If you fall off the wagon, I am sure one of your friends will remind you of the goals you set.
  2. MAKE A PLAN – Don’t just jump back into exercise without having a plan.  Know how you are going to achieve your goals and what type of exercise you are going to be performing.  If you need more help with this, hire a personal trainer to get you on your way.
  3. MAKE AN APPOINTMENT- If you make time in your daily planner to exercise, you are more likely to stick with it than making an excuse why you can’t go to the gym.  Think of it as an important business appointment you cannot miss.
  4. MAKE EXERCISE FUN- Listen to your I-pod, watch television, or workout with a friend.  When you make exercise fun and not a chore, you will be more likely to stick with your plan and see the results you want.
  5. ASK FOR HELP - DO NOT be afraid to ask for help in the gym.  The worst thing you can do is not ask questions, get frustrated, and give up.  The staff at the gym is there to assist you with any questions or problems you might have.
