Walking into a fitness center can be intimidating—especially for an overweight fourteen year old. This happened to Nic DeCaire (owner of Fusion Fitness Center in Newark DE) when he began his journey into the fitness world. He worked at a local gym while going to high school and became fascinated with how the fitness industry worked. He knew he would pursue fitness as his calling when he was older and began to lose weight, eat properly and learn all he could from his mentors. He started competing in powerlifting and bodybuilding and eventually became a certified personal trainer at age 18.
While attending the University of Delaware, Nic became sidetracked due to the volume of his personal training business and left school to pursue his avocation on a full-time basis. He never lost sight of his dream—to open his own fitness center one day. This required dedication and lots of money. The dedication he had, the money he did not. Knowing that without a college degree and steady income, the banks would never give him a loan to open up his dream facility, Nic saved and saved. He knew that real estate was a good investment, and he took the gamble by buying a home. The next four years were spent doing renovations (with the help of his friends) to make it ready to sell and reap the benefits. In November of 2005 the house went on the market and sold in nine days, affording Nic the necessary start-up funds to open his dream fitness center.
The first step was finding a building. Nic wanted to be in Newark because it offers a diverse population of long-time residents, students and a vibrant business community. Realistically, he knew he couldn’t afford to purchase a building and that renting a space was the answer. That’s when he found Market East Plaza and some warehouse space for rent at the rear of the center. When Nic walked into the building for the first time, he had his doubts. It needed a lot of work. He was discouraged. His friend Robbie, who helped him renovate his house, had a different vision. He knew it had a good framework and that with some hard work and imagination, Nic would soon become the proprietor of his own gym. The lease was signed and the construction began. Since he could not afford to pay a contractor, Nic and friends did the lion’s share of the labor—from demolition to hanging the last picture in the locker rooms. It took 3 months and 1800 hours to complete. His dream was realized.
Fusion Fitness is the result of Nic’s own experience as a frightened 14-year-old. He knew that Fusion Fitness would be non-intimidating, friendly, clean environment. And it is. The staff members always have smiles on their faces and are ready to help clients with any questions or challenges they are facing.
When you walk into Fusion Fitness Center, you can feel a sense of pride—pride that a dream has been realized. Ask for Nic or one of his staff members to give you a tour. They are proud of Fusion Fitness Center. It’s a dream come true.
